As children start school for the first time or transition to Secondary school, every parent wants to be able to support them in any way they can. But have you ever felt that you are not sure of where to begin to get them off to the best possible start? We have put together a handy list of five of the top ways to help, so that you can be sure your child hits the ground running. Here are 5 Simple things you can do at home to improve your child’s learning :

1. Routine makes perfect

An important step in setting your children up for success is to make sure that they have a well established routine at home. This will have two benefits. Firstly, it will guarantee that your son or daughter is able to settle into school routines quickly and easily, meaning they can focus on learning sooner. Secondly, with a solid routine at home, you will find that your children will be more settled by the expectation of doing homework, housework and going to bed at particular times every day.

2. Fit fun learning into everyday

There are so many simple and engaging ways to help children and teens to reinforce and practice what they have been learning at school. Playing simple word games such as eye spy, word ‘tennis’ where children have to think of a word beginning with the end sound of the last word said or even talking about what happened at school are all great ways to encourage skill practice at home. Ask older children to practice summarising their favourite TV programs orally or in writing. If there is a rule at home that they disagree with, encourage them to write a persuasive letter to you, arguing their case. For students studying VCE subjects, be sure to encourage and support attendance at relevant presentations, exhibitions and performances that link to their subject area.

3. Use screen time for education

We all know that each generation becomes more and more adept at using technology. Parents also know what a battle it can be to limit their children’s screen time! So why not combine learning and fun by using your device for education? These days there are so many educational programs and apps to choose from, it can be difficult to know which are worthwhile. Start by checking with your child’s school to see if they have any subscriptions to well structured learning programs that can be used at home, such as Reading Eggs or Mathletics. Another idea is to encourage teens to start their own blog or YouTube channel about a topic they are interested in, to encourage writing and oral expression. Privacy settings make these simple to control who is able to access content.

4. Build their body, not just their brain

While academic skills are important, it’s imperative not to solely focus on them. In fact, many studies agree that physical activity boosts cognitive ability greatly, which is an excellent reason to encourage your child to continue with their sporting pursuits. It is also valuable to encourage children to participate in simple physical activities with you, such as walks to the local park or a jog together, to build an interest in exercise, which will benefit them in their future.

5. Find an expert tutor to help

If you find that your child is still struggling, or requires extra assistance that you are unable to provide, you may find it worthwhile to engage an expert private tutor.
